Physician Burnout and the Light-at-the-End-of-the-Tunnel Illusion

Posted by Dike Drummond MD

Physician Burnout and the Light-at-the-End-of-the-Tunnel Illusion

"I'm just hoping there is a light at the end of this tunnel"

I know you've heard the little voice in your head say that before. Me too. Happens to all of us from time to time.

These thoughts come up when you are slogging away day after day --  with no visible end to this struggle in sight. You have been going at this issue for a while now, your energy is drained and your inner pessimist comes out. It is extremely common in overwhelmed doctors when you are dancing on the cliff edge of physician burnout.

I want you to know something very important ...

There Is No Tunnel !
It is an illusion caused by Einstein's Insanity Trap.

As long as you keep doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result ... it will appear you are stuck in a long dark tunnel.  The more you do the same things over and over - the longer and darker the tunnel becomes. Your energy, drive and hope are drained and you wonder whether things will ever get better.

Let me show how this mind trick keeps us all stuck and some specific steps you can take to shatter this Tunnel Illusion and free yourself.

Change is difficult, grinding work for most people - physicians are no exception. This hole in the sidewalk may make it easier for you this week.

Stop Physician Burnout - Delegate Your Punch List

Posted by Dike Drummond MD

Stop Physician Burnout - Delegate Your Punch List for the shortest path to a better quality of life

You know your Punch List ... right? It is that to-do list of tasks to complete at home. Things like clean the house, mow the lawn, balance the checkbook, fix the door hinge on the closet, find an outfit for the office party next weekend ... etc. etc.

It's that list you scrawl on a spare piece of paper containing all the routine activities of monthly living we each must take responsibility for. It is that list you worry about, fret over and never seem to get through for a simple reason ... you are busy taking care of patients, documentation and all the other activities of being a doctor.

They pile up on the list and proceed to suck you dry on your off days -- when you try to complete as many as possible in your "free time". They take up WAY TOO MUCH of your down time -- your recharge time - your LIFE.

Work is busy enough. Ideally home is relaxing ... NOT just a different flavor of overwhelm.

In this blog post let me show you a way to rapidly restore a sense of balance and control by delegating your punch list to people who are more qualified, are eager to help you and can free you up to grow and maintain a real life outside of work.

I will show you our Master List of delegatable tasks and a Six Step Plan to Get Started Now.

Physician Heal Thyself - NOT - do these things instead

Posted by Dike Drummond MD

"Physician heal thyself "
Luke 4:23

This bible quote is the single most inappropriate phrase uttered in any conversation about physician burnout.

Often it masquerades as a witty comeback when blaming a physician for being a human being.

IMHO, these three words are not applicable to anything about the causes or prevention of physician burnout.

To look a suffering doctor in the eye and harummph "physician heal thyself" is the apex of hypocrisy - especially if the speaker is not a doctor - and it needs to stop now.

In this blog post let me show you why this meme is completely off the mark -- and five actions you can take that will actually prevent physician burnout -- much more effectively than any attempt at physician heal thyself - whatever the heck that is supposed to mean.

Stop Physician Burnout - the Quadruple Aim Prime Directive for Physician Leaders

Posted by Dike Drummond MD

The modern physician burnout epidemic is a sign that doctors are at a tipping point ... as in tipping over the edge of a cliff. You think burnout is bad now ... project a future where we simply continue dumping additional responsibilities on their backs as usual.

The Quadruple Aim has the potential to turn the tide of stress and burnout, but only if we can bridge the gulf between UNDERSTANDING the Quadruple Aim and actually IMPLEMENTING it.

Let me show you a powerful way to bring the Quadruple Aim to life in your organization with a simple Prime Directive for Healthcare Leaders.

Stop Physician Burnout - Book Review

The Canadian Society of Physician Leaders recently reviewed our book Stop Physician Burnout in their CJPL Journal ... in what I will characterize as glowing terms.

It is great to see an official review of a self-published book like ours. We have over 25,000 copies in print at this point, helping doctors around the world build their burnout prevention strategy. It is about time an official body of some kind recognized the value of this approach.

Date night secrets for the busy physician

Let me ask you a quick question. When was your last quality Date Night? If it was more than two months ago, this post is specifically for you.

One of the key factors in preventing physician burnout is a strong primary relationship with your loved ones. None is as important as your relationship with your spouse/significant other.

Unfortunately a Date Night is often something that gets left out of our busy weeks. When I train groups of doctors is is not uncommon for half the hands to go up when I ask the question, "How many of you have not had a date night in the last two months."

Date Nights are a key tool to prevent physician burnout

Here are five Date Night Secrets we teach all of our private coaching clients
